The Atlas Lions roared once again as Morocco produced a heroic comeback to defeat the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties and advance to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After a tense round-of-32 encounter that ended 1-1 following extra time, Morocco held their nerve from the spot, with midfielder Ismaila Sambari converting the decisive penalty to send the North African side into the last 16.
Cody Gakpo had given the Netherlands a late lead in the 72nd minute, capitalizing on a swift counter-attack to put the Oranje in front.
However, deep into stoppage time, Morocco striker Diop rose to the occasion, equalizing in the 91st minute with a clinical finish that sent the Moroccan fans into raptures and forced the match into extra time.
Both teams pushed hard during the additional 30 minutes but failed to find a winner, setting the stage for a dramatic penalty shootout. Morocco proved more composed under pressure, prevailing 3-2 after Sambari coolly slotted home the winning kick.
The result marks another landmark achievement for the Atlas Lions, who continue to defy expectations on the biggest stage.
Having already impressed in previous tournaments, Morocco’s resilience and tactical discipline under pressure have once again shone through.
