The Saudi Pro League (SPL) has officially confirmed the conclusion of Michael Emenalo’s contractual relationship with the league, ending his tenure as Head of Football (Chief Football Executive).

The announcement, shared widely on Monday, marks the close of nearly three years for the Nigerian football executive, who was appointed as the SPL’s first Director of Football in July 2023.

Emenalo played a pivotal role in the league’s ambitious transformation, helping centralize player recruitment through the Player Acquisition Center of Excellence (PACE) and supporting the influx of global stars.

Emenalo, a former Nigerian international and Chelsea technical director (2011–2017), brought extensive Premier League experience to the SPL. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he contributed to signing talents like Mohamed Salah, Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, and N’Golo Kanté.

In Saudi Arabia, he oversaw efforts to elevate the league’s profile, aiding high-profile arrivals such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Neymar, and Riyad Mahrez.

The SPL described the end of his term as a “successful conclusion,” though no specific reasons for the departure were detailed in initial statements.

Reports indicate Emenalo submitted his resignation via email, with no immediate comment from the league on the circumstances.

Jesus Arroyo, currently an advisor to the SPL CEO, is expected to step in as the new Sporting Director once formal procedures are completed.

The league continues its push for growth, focusing on infrastructure, youth development, academies, and increasing competitiveness both domestically and on the Asian stage.

Emenalo’s departure comes as the SPL matures beyond its initial star-signing phase, shifting emphasis toward sustainable development and long-term structures.
