Tunisia are set to appoint experienced French tactician Hervé Renard as their new head coach following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after the Carthage Eagles’ humiliating 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Lamouchi was relieved of his duties on Sunday night after Tunisia’s poor start to the tournament sparked concerns within the Tunisia Football Federation.

Renard, who boasts vast international experience, was expected to be at the World Cup with Saudi Arabia but was dismissed by the Gulf nation in April.

The 56-year-old previously guided Saudi Arabia to one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history when they defeated eventual champions Argentina 2-1 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Following his first spell with Saudi Arabia, Renard took charge of the France women’s national team before returning for a second stint with the Green Falcons.

The Frenchman also came close to taking over as Côte d’Ivoire coach during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after the dismissal of Jean-Louis Gasset midway through the tournament, although the move did not materialise.

Should his appointment be confirmed, Renard will face an immediate challenge as Tunisia seek to revive their World Cup campaign.

The North Africans still have crucial Group F fixtures against Japan and the Netherlands, with hopes of reaching the knockout stage hanging in the balance.

The Tunisia Football Federation is expected to make an official announcement regarding Renard’s appointment in the coming days.
