Former Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has opened up on what he misses most about playing for the Nigerian national team following his retirement from international football.
Troost-Ekong, who stepped away from international duty after Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup, said his decision was carefully considered and remains one he stands by, even as he reflects on his time with the national team.
Speaking during a roundtable discussion on Calvin Bassey’s podcast, the experienced centre-back described the Super Eagles dressing room as a family he deeply cherishes.
“More than anything, I miss being with the guys. I miss being with… this is family to me, you know,” Troost-Ekong said.
He added that while he occasionally reminisces about playing on the big stage, he is at peace with his decision to retire from international football.
“I envision again like walking out for the first time, walking out on the pitch, those games, those moments. But I have no regrets and it was my decision to stop. Of course, I thought about it so much, so much went on in my head, but I don’t think I necessarily miss that part.
“I might do it again later but I’m content. But I miss the team environment and when I see the team on TV now, I have my hands itching like I want to be there with them again, to share those moments. But besides that, I’m good, guys.”
Troost-Ekong remains one of the key figures in recent Super Eagles squads, having played a leadership role across several major international tournaments.
