Nigeria will not participate in the qualifiers for the upcoming African Table Tennis Championships after the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) withdrew from the competition due to financial constraints.

The qualifiers were scheduled to take place in Conakry, Guinea, with successful teams expected to secure places at the African Table Tennis Championships in Morocco in October.

NTTF President, Mr. Adesoji Tayo, disclosed that the federation explored every possible avenue to ensure Nigeria’s participation but was ultimately unable to raise the funds required for the trip.

According to Tayo, the high cost of flight tickets, coupled with the absence of financial support from the National Sports Commission (NSC), made it impossible for the team to travel to Guinea.

The withdrawal means Nigeria will miss the qualification event, dealing a significant setback to the country’s table tennis programme and denying its players the opportunity to compete for places at the continental championships in Morocco later this year.

The development is expected to raise fresh concerns over funding for sports federations and the impact of financial challenges on Nigeria’s participation in international competitions.
