Canada midfielder Stephen Eustáquio has revealed that he dedicated his dramatic winning goal against South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to Nigeria’s Super Eagles defender, Zaidu Sanusi.

Eustáquio scored the decisive goal in stoppage time to hand Canada a 1-0 victory over South Africa in the Round of 32, sealing his country’s place in the last 16 of the tournament.

Speaking after the match, the FC Porto midfielder disclosed that he had spoken with his club teammate, Zaidu Sanusi, before the encounter and dedicated the goal to the Nigerian international.

“It was my teammate at FC Porto, Zaidu Sanusi.

The goal was dedicated to him. We spoke on the phone before the game about how they treat other migrants. I needed to score,” Eustáquio said after the match.

The emotional tribute highlighted the strong bond between the two FC Porto teammates, with Eustáquio’s decisive strike ensuring Canada’s historic progression to the next round of the FIFA World Cup.
