South African football has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, just days after returning from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Adams was part of South Africa’s historic World Cup campaign, featuring in three matches as Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32 before suffering elimination to Canada. The talented midfielder had also enjoyed a successful season with Mamelodi Sundowns, helping the club win the CAF Champions League.
Reports have circulated on social media claiming Adams died by suicide after battling depression. However, as of now, authorities and the player’s family have not officially confirmed the cause of death, with the family requesting privacy during this difficult period.
Tributes have poured in from across the football community, with South African officials, football stakeholders and FIFA President Gianni Infantino paying tribute to Adams, remembering him as one of the country’s brightest talents whose promising career was cut tragically short.
