Nigeria have been stripped of the African and national U-20 records set in the mixed 4x100m relay at the World U-20 Athletics Championships after the team was disqualified over the use of unauthorised spikes.

The Nigerian quartet of Tejiri Godwin, Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo, Perfect Faye and Miracle Ezechukwu clocked an impressive 41.77 seconds to finish fourth in the final.

However, the result was subsequently annulled after officials determined that Faye had competed in a pair of spikes that were not included on the World Athletics approved footwear list.

The disqualification means Nigeria loses both the African U-20 record and national U-20 record established with the 41.77-second performance.

The setback comes after an otherwise strong showing by Nigeria’s young athletes at the championships.
