Nigeria’s Edidiong Joseph Umoafia produced a remarkable performance to win the men’s 71kg weightlifting gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, setting a new Commonwealth Games record with a combined lift of 319kg.
Umoafia dominated the competition from start to finish, opening with a Games record lift of 147kg in the snatch before adding 172kg in the clean and jerk to secure the title and seal another memorable victory for Team Nigeria.
The Nigerian finished ahead of Samoa’s Joseph Tafi, who claimed the silver medal with a total lift of 314kg, while Elgin Moses of Nauru took bronze after recording 310kg.
Umoafia’s triumph marks Nigeria’s fourth gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, further strengthening the country’s impressive medal haul at the competition.
