The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, as the new coach of Nigeria’s U-23 national team ahead of the qualification campaign for the 2028 Olympic Games.

The decision comes as the federation seeks to revive the country’s fortunes in Olympic men’s football after failing to qualify for the last two editions of the Games.

Nigeria has historically been one of Africa’s strongest teams at the Olympics, highlighted by its gold medal triumph at the 1996 Summer Olympics and a bronze-medal finish at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

With preparations for the 2028 Olympic qualifiers gradually gathering momentum, the NFF has entrusted Chelle with the responsibility of leading the U-23 side while continuing his role with the senior national team.

The appointment is expected to provide continuity in the development of young players and strengthen the pathway from the U-23 team to the Super Eagles as Nigeria targets a return to Olympic football.
