World football governing body FIFA has confirmed that Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey will be unavailable for the Black Stars’ opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Panama after his visa application to enter Canada was denied.

In a statement released on Friday, FIFA disclosed that Partey would be unable to travel from Ghana’s Team Base Camp in Boston, United States, to Canada ahead of the Group Stage fixture scheduled for Wednesday, June 17.

“FIFA can confirm that player Thomas Partey will be unable to travel from Ghana’s Team Base Camp in Boston, USA, to Canada for their first match against Panama on Wednesday, 17 June, as his visa application has been refused by the Canadian government,” the statement read.

The world football body further clarified its role regarding immigration matters, stressing that visa decisions remain the sole responsibility of host nations.

“FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas.

As with previous FIFA events, the host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country,” FIFA added.

Partey’s absence represents a significant setback for Ghana as they prepare to begin their World Cup campaign against Panama.

The experienced midfielder has been a key figure for the Black Stars in recent years, providing leadership and stability in the middle of the park.

It remains unclear whether the visa issue will be resolved in time for Ghana’s subsequent matches at the tournament, with the Ghana Football Association expected to continue engaging with relevant authorities over the matter.
