Team Nigeria wrapped up its campaign at the 24th African Athletics Championships with a total haul of 12 medals, following a dominant gold-medal performance in the women’s 4x400m relay on the final day of competition.

The quartet of Esther Okon, Toheebat Jimoh, Jecinter Lawrence and Patience Okon-George delivered a commanding display to successfully defend Nigeria’s title in the event.

The team clocked 3:29.25, finishing well ahead of Ethiopia and Kenya in Sunday’s race.

Nigeria controlled the contest from the opening leg and surged clear of the field, crossing the finish line with a significant margin nearly 30 metres ahead of their closest rivals to secure the country’s fourth gold medal of the championships.

The result capped a solid outing for Team Nigeria, who ended the competition with four gold, five silver and three bronze medals.

The performance saw the country place fourth overall in the final standings, behind Kenya, South Africa and Ethiopia.
