Former Senegal captain Sadio Mané has announced his retirement from international football following the Teranga Lions’ disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Senegal endured an underwhelming tournament, with their journey ending in the Round of 32 after a 3-2 defeat to Belgium.

The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich forward confirmed his decision in an emotional farewell message, bringing an end to a distinguished international career in which he became one of Senegal’s greatest-ever players.

“Know that I sacrificed everything for this flag. I gave my best and always fought fiercely for our country. Your continuous support has been the driving force behind my success,” Mane said.

The 34-year-old also expressed his desire to continue serving Senegalian football in a different capacity.

“Tomorrow, I will be happy to put my experience at the service of the nation, whether within the technical staff, on the coaching benches, or in management.

“Long live Senegal.”

Mane leaves the national team after years of outstanding service, having played a key role in Senegal’s triumph at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and their qualification for multiple major international tournaments. His retirement marks the end of an era for the Teranga Lions.
