The FIFA Council has approved a significant amendment to its Governance Regulations, paving the way for Afghan female players to represent their country in official international competitions.

The decision marks a major breakthrough for women’s football in Afghanistan, particularly for players who have been unable to compete internationally in recent years due to challenging circumstances.

Under the new regulation, Afghan female footballers  including members of the FIFA-funded and supported Afghan Women United squad  are now eligible to participate in FIFA-sanctioned matches while maintaining official recognition of their national identity.

FIFA stated that the move aligns with its broader commitment to inclusivity, development, and the protection of players’ rights, ensuring that no group is excluded from the global game.

The Afghan Women United team, established with FIFA’s backing, has provided a platform for displaced Afghan players to continue their careers and remain connected to international football.

The latest ruling is expected to further strengthen their pathway to competitive action on the global stage.

This development is widely seen as a progressive step in safeguarding opportunities for female athletes and reinforcing FIFA’s stance on equality within the sport.
