Ashley Young announces retirement from professional football

Former England international Ashley Young has announced his retirement from professional football after a career spanning more than two decades.

The former winger and full-back confirmed the decision through his social media account on Thursday afternoon, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year journey in the game.

In an emotional farewell message, Young reflected on the clubs and stadiums that shaped his career.

“From Sefton Road to Vicarage Road to Villa Park to Wembley to Old Trafford to San Siro back to Villa Park to Goodison Park and finally to Portman Road. It’s been some journey that I only dreamt of as a boy! But with this dream there has to be an ending and Saturday might be the Last Game Of My Professional Career. 23 years and OUT!”

The versatile defender began his professional career with Watford F.C. before enjoying successful spells with Aston Villa F.C., Manchester United F.C., Inter Milan, Everton F.C. and Ipswich Town F.C..

During his club career, Young scored 71 goals and won several major honours, including the Premier League, FA Cup and Serie A titles.

At international level, Young earned 39 caps for England national football team and scored seven goals for the Three Lions.
