Alexander Zverev has won the US Open title after defeating American eighth seed Ben Shelton in four sets on Sunday, securing the second Grand Slam trophy of his career.
The top-seeded German produced a composed performance to overcome Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-2 and add the New York crown to his French Open triumph earlier this year.
Zverev dominated the opening two sets and appeared on course for a straight-sets victory before Shelton fought back to take the third set 7-5 and briefly threaten a dramatic comeback.
However, the German regained control in the fourth set, breaking Shelton’s resistance to close out the championship in convincing fashion.
The victory also allows Zverev to erase painful memories of his 2020 US Open final defeat to Dominic Thiem, when he was just two points away from claiming his maiden Grand Slam title before surrendering a two-set lead in a five-set thriller.
For Shelton, the defeat ended his hopes of becoming the first American man in 23 years to win a Grand Slam singles title.
