Nigerian-American basketball star Nneka Ogwumike has reportedly emerged as one of the potential candidates to become the next commissioner of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).
According to WNBA journalist Alexa Philippou, Ogwumike’s name is on the shortlist of candidates being considered for the league’s top executive position following Cathy Engelbert’s decision to step down as commissioner at the end of the 2026 season.
Ogwumike, who recently announced her retirement from professional basketball after the 2026 season, has enjoyed a distinguished 15-year WNBA career. She was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft, won the 2016 WNBA MVP award and championship, and has been selected to 11 All-Star Games.
The 36-year-old has also served as president of the Women’s National Basketball Players Association, giving her extensive experience in player representation and league matters.
Her potential appointment would represent a significant development for the WNBA, while also providing a major source of inspiration and visibility for Nigerian basketball.
