Nigeria’s D’Tigress suffered 99-81 defeat to South Korea in their opening match of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup on Friday.

The African champions struggled to contain South Korea’s sharp shooting and pace throughout the contest at the tournament venue in Germany. The Asian side built a commanding lead and closed out an 18-point victory, leaving Nigeria still searching for their first win against an Asian opponent at the FIBA Women’s World Cup.

The result also extends Nigeria’s unwanted record of failing to win their opening game at the global showpiece.

D’Tigress showed fight at times but were unable to match South Korea’s offensive efficiency. The loss puts early pressure on the Nigerian side as they turn their attention to their next Group stage fixture against Hungary.

The encounter with Hungary is expected to present another stern test. Coach and players will be looking for a strong response to keep their World Cup campaign alive.

Final score: Nigeria 81 – South Korea 99

D’Tigress next face Hungary.
