Nigeria’s Super Falcons will not feature at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in their playoff clash.
The Super Falcons had been handed a second opportunity to secure qualification after their quarter-final exit at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
After a goalless first half, South Africa took control of the encounter after the break, with Thembi Kgatlana opening the scoring before Refiloe Jane doubled Banyana Banyana’s advantage.
Nigeria fought back when Christy Ucheibe converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit.
However, the Super Falcons could not find the equaliser before the final whistle, bringing an end to their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
The defeat means Nigeria will miss the global tournament, while South Africa progress with their World Cup qualification hopes intact.
