World football governing body FIFA is set to open disciplinary proceedings against the Croatian Football Federation following crowd trouble during Croatia’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The incident occurred in stoppage time after Croatia had a late equaliser ruled out following a VAR review.

Frustrated by the decision, sections of the Croatian supporters threw cans and bottles onto the pitch, forcing a temporary delay before play could resume.

FIFA is expected to examine the official match reports before deciding on possible sanctions against the Croatian Football Federation.

The governing body could impose disciplinary measures ranging from financial penalties to other sanctions, depending on the outcome of its investigation.

The defeat ended Croatia’s World Cup campaign, while Portugal progressed to the Round of 16 after a dramatic and hard-fought encounter.
