Canada booked their place in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa in Sunday’s knockout clash.

A disciplined Canadian performance and a decisive second-half strike proved enough to separate the two sides in a fiercely contested encounter as South Africa’s impressive World Cup journey came to an end.

South Africa began brightly, buoyed by strong support in the stands, and looked determined to become the first African side to advance from the round of 32. The Bafana Bafana pressed aggressively in the opening exchanges, forcing Canada to defend deep while searching for opportunities on the counterattack.

The North Americans gradually settled into the contest and began enjoying more possession midway through the first half. Canada created a number of promising openings but were repeatedly frustrated by South Africa’s organised backline and resilient goalkeeping, leaving the teams deadlocked at the interval.

The breakthrough eventually arrived after the restart as Canada capitalised on sustained pressure to find the decisive goal. A swift attacking move carved open the South African defence before the ball was calmly dispatched into the net, handing the Canadians a crucial advantage.

Forced to respond, South Africa pushed more players forward in search of an equaliser. The Africans created several dangerous moments in the closing stages, but Canada’s defence stood firm, clearing crosses and blocking efforts to preserve their slender lead.

The defeat marked the end of an encouraging World Cup campaign for South Africa, who exceeded expectations by progressing beyond the group stage before falling narrowly in the knockout rounds.

Canada, meanwhile, marched into the last 16 with another disciplined display that highlighted both their defensive resilience and clinical finishing. Their victory also ensured another CONCACAF representative remained in contention for the World Cup title.

The Canadians will now face the winners of the round of 32 clash between the Netherlands and Morocco, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
