Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have dropped to 53rd in the world following the latest rankings released by FIBA.

After a busy summer of global basketball action, including several continental tournaments, D’Tigers  who reached the quarter-finals of the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket in Angola last month  slipped 11 places from their March 2025 position of 42nd.

The 2015 African champions also fell on the continental ladder, sliding from sixth to eighth in Africa. They now hold 248.7 points, down from 297.8 in March.

Nigeria were among the biggest losers in the latest update, alongside Morocco, Tunisia, the Virgin Islands, and Kosovo. On the other hand, Mali, South Africa, Turkey, Cyprus, and Jamaica recorded significant gains.

On the African scene, South Sudan remain the continent’s top-ranked team with 446.7 points, despite dropping from 23rd to 24th globally. Newly crowned AfroBasket champions Angola climbed four spots to become Africa’s No. 2 side and now sit 29th in the world. Rounding out Africa’s top 10 are Ivory Coast, Egypt, Senegal, Cape Verde, Tunisia, Cameroon, and Mali.

As expected, the United States continue to dominate the global standings with 845.8 points, followed by reigning world champions Germany (765.9). Serbia, France, and Canada complete the top five.
