Spain booked their place in the next stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Portugal, ending the hopes of veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo of finally lifting the coveted trophy.
The fiercely contested encounter appeared destined for extra time before Mikel Merino struck in the 90th minute, handing Spain a late winner and sealing their progression in the tournament.
In another Round of 16 clash, Belgium produced a dominant display to defeat the United States 4-1.
The Belgians took an early lead through Charles De Ketelaere in the ninth minute, but Malik Tillman restored parity for the Americans in the 31st minute.
Belgium responded almost immediately, with De Ketelaere grabbing his second goal of the match to restore his side’s advantage before halftime.
Hans Vanaken added a third to put the game beyond the United States, while Romelu Lukaku completed the rout with Belgium’s fourth goal.
The return of Folarin Balogun from suspension did little to inspire the United States, as they bowed out of the competition following the comprehensive defeat.
