Defending champions Argentina produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 in a thrilling Round of 16 clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Pharaohs made a dream start to the encounter, taking the lead in the 15th minute through Yasser Ibrahim. Egypt doubled their advantage early in the second half when Zizo found the back of the net, leaving the defending champions with a mountain to climb.

Argentina had an opportunity to reduce the deficit before the break, but Lionel Messi missed a penalty to keep Egypt firmly in control.

The South Americans, however, responded strongly in the second half. Cristian Romero pulled one back to spark the comeback before Messi made amends for his earlier penalty miss by scoring the equaliser to make it 2-2.

With extra time looming, Enzo Fernández struck in the 90th minute to complete a dramatic turnaround and seal a 3-2 victory for Argentina, sending the defending champions through to the quarter-finals.
