South Africa has officially announced its intention to bid for the 2036 or 2040 Olympic and Paralympic Games, in what could mark a historic milestone for the African continent.

The bid, backed by the South African government and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), aims to position the country as the first African nation to host the prestigious global sporting event.

Officials behind the proposal revealed that the bid will focus heavily on the use of existing infrastructure, a strategy designed to reduce costs while ensuring sustainability.

South Africa’s experience in hosting major international competitions, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup, is expected to strengthen its case.

Beyond sports, the bid is also being driven by economic ambitions, with authorities highlighting the potential to stimulate growth, boost tourism, and create jobs across multiple sectors.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has reportedly responded positively to initial discussions, raising optimism about the feasibility of the bid.

If successful, South Africa would make history by bringing the Olympic Games to Africa for the first time, a development widely seen as a significant step in the global expansion of the Olympic movement.
