Ademola Lookman etched his name into the record books, but it proved insufficient as 10-man Real Madrid fought back to secure a 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid in a La Liga clash at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

The Nigerian forward became the first player from his country to score in the Madrid derby, taking his tally to two goals in 12 league appearances in his debut season.

With FC Barcelona having earlier stretched their lead at the top of the table to seven points after victory over Rayo Vallecano, Madrid began brightly on home soil.

However, it was Atletico who struck first in the 33rd minute. Johnny Cardoso initiated the move, finding Lookman on the left flank.

After linking up with Matteo Ruggeri, the ball eventually returned to Lookman, who calmly finished from close range following a clever backheel assist from Giuliano Simeone.

Madrid responded emphatically after the break, turning the game around within 10 minutes. Vinicius Junior converted a penalty in the 52nd minute before Federico Valverde added a second three minutes later.

Atletico drew level in the 66th minute through a stunning effort from Nahuel Molina, but Vinicius restored Madrid’s advantage with a fine strike from the edge of the box in the 72nd minute.

The hosts were later reduced to 10 men after Valverde received a straight red card following a VAR review, but they held on to claim all three points.
