Team Nigeria has suffered a major setback ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with long jump star Ese Brume ruled out of the competition due to injury.
Brume, who was expected to defend the women’s long jump title she won at the previous edition, has been deemed unfit to compete following the injury setback.
Her withdrawal means the reigning Commonwealth champion will not have the opportunity to defend the gold medal she claimed with a Games record leap of 7.00 metres at the last edition.
To fill the vacant spot, Ruth Usoro has been drafted into the Nigerian squad. She will now compete alongside Prestina Ochonogor in the women’s long jump event.
Brume’s absence is a significant blow to Team Nigeria, given her pedigree as one of Africa’s most accomplished long jumpers.
However, the inclusion of Usoro alongside the talented Ochonogor provides Nigeria with a strong pair capable of challenging for medals at the Games.
