The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the 2027 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will feature 24 national teams, dismissing reports suggesting an expansion of the tournament.
Speaking during Wednesday’s press conference, CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe clarified that the competition will retain its current 24-team format.
His statement comes amid media reports claiming that the number of participating teams would increase, a claim CAF has now described as inaccurate.
Dr. Motsepe also confirmed that the 2027 AFCON will be held in June and July 2027, while the qualification series is scheduled to begin in September and October 2026.
The confirmation puts an end to speculation surrounding the format of Africa’s biggest football tournament as participating nations prepare for the qualification campaign.
