The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has announced that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be expanded to 28 teams.
Motsepe confirmed that the new format will feature seven groups of four teams each, marking a significant increase from the current 24-team structure.
The move is aimed at giving more African nations the opportunity to compete at the continent’s premier football tournament.
The expansion, however, places added responsibility on the co-hosts of the next edition Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to accelerate their preparations.
Each of the host nations is now expected to provide at least two standard stadiums that meet CAF requirements, as well as the necessary infrastructure to support the increased number of teams and matches.
CAF believes the expansion will boost football development across the continent while enhancing competition and commercial value of the tournament.
