Ilkay Gündogan has retired from the German national team after 82 games.
The German midfielder has announced in a post on the social media X that he has played his last international match.
“After a few weeks of deliberation, I have come to the conclusion that it is time for me to stop playing for the German national team.
“I look back on my 82 international matches for my country, my home, with great pride.
” I never dreamed of that when I made my national team debut back in 2011.
“The highlight was definitely getting the honor of being captain during the EC at home.
“After all these years, we were finally able to make the country proud. I’m glad I was a part of it.
But despite that, I felt a tiredness in my body and my head after the tournament. It got me thinking.
The matches at both club and national team level will not be fewer”, he wrote.
