Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu finally opened his scoring account for the new season, netting twice in Trabzonspor’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Gençlerbirliği on Sunday.

Onuachu, who finished as the joint-top scorer in the Turkish Süper Lig last season, had endured a difficult start to the campaign, failing to find the net in his first five appearances across all competitions.

The 31-year-old quickly put that drought behind him, opening the scoring in the fifth minute before completing his brace in the 23rd minute after Mohamed Salah had converted from the penalty spot.

However, Onuachu’s impressive outing was cut short in the 44th minute when he was substituted in what appeared to be an injury-forced change. Guinea-Bissau forward Franculino came on as his replacement.

Trabzonspor continued their dominance after the interval, with Micu making it 4-0 in the 59th minute before Franculino completed the rout in the 78th minute.

The brace will come as a major boost for Onuachu, who will now look to build momentum as Trabzonspor’s campaign gathers pace.
