Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a career that spanned nearly two decades.
Akpeyi confirmed his decision during an event in South Africa, revealing that he has already begun preparations for the next phase of his career in coaching.
“I’ve retired from active football. I have started my coaching courses and am simply waiting for an opportunity to begin working,” Akpeyi said.
The 39-year-old shot-stopper began his professional career in Nigeria with Warri Wolves before moving to South Africa, where he featured for clubs including Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs.
His performances in the South African top flight established him as one of the most experienced Nigerian goalkeepers abroad.
At the international level, Akpeyi represented Nigeria at several major tournaments. He was part of the Super Eagles squad that finished third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Among his notable achievements, Akpeyi won the Federation Cup titles in 2011 and 2012, was a runner-up at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2005, claimed a bronze medal with Nigeria’s football team at the 2016 Olympic Games, and also secured a bronze medal at the 2019 AFCON.
Having hung up his gloves, Akpeyi is now focused on pursuing a coaching career as he looks to remain involved in the development of football. :::
