The Super Falcons of Nigeria produced a dominant second-half display to defeat Senegal’s Teranga Lionesses 3-0 in the second of their two international friendly matches at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Monday.
After a closely contested and goalless first half, the nine-time African champions found their rhythm after the break to secure an emphatic victory in front of their home supporters.
Nigeria started the match brightly and almost took the lead early on when captain Rasheedat Ajibade delivered a dangerous set-piece in the opening minute, but the opportunity went begging.
Joy Omewa also threatened shortly afterwards as the Super Falcons maintained early pressure on the Senegalese defence.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, the hosts were unable to break the deadlock in the first half.
A golden opportunity was squandered in the 13th minute, while Gift Monday continued to trouble Senegal’s backline with her pace and movement.
Omewa came closest to opening the scoring in the 15th minute after rounding the goalkeeper, only to see her effort crash against the woodwork.
The breakthrough finally arrived three minutes into the second half. In the 48th minute, Shukurat Oladipo delivered an inviting cross that Omewa expertly headed home to hand Nigeria a deserved lead.
The Super Falcons grew in confidence following the opener and doubled their advantage seven minutes later. Omewa showcased her strength and composure as she powered past the Senegalese defenders before calmly finishing to complete her brace in the 55th minute.
Nigeria sealed the victory in the 66th minute when Ajibade embarked on a brilliant run before setting up substitute Asisat Oshoala, who had replaced Omewa, to slot home the third goal of the encounter.
The convincing victory highlighted the Super Falcons’ attacking quality and defensive discipline as they maintained control throughout the contest.
The performance will provide a significant boost for the reigning Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions as they continue preparations for the upcoming tournament in Morocco.
