Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has called for improved welfare and financial conditions for indigenous football players in Nigeria.
The former Super Eagles midfielder made the appeal during a media chat with Brila FM, stressing the importance of prompt salary payments and a conducive league environment to retain players in the country.
Oliseh, who also featured for Julius Berger FC during his playing career, noted that football remains the primary source of livelihood for many players and their families.
“Look, football is a business, it’s what he uses to pay his bills, feed his family and plan his future,” Oliseh said.
“Even if it’s 1,000 dollars, if you multiply it to Naira it’s a big money. When we were playing there was never one month that they owed us. It might be small, but we were paid on time.
“People built families with that money with consistent savings. If you want players to stay in Nigeria ensure the league is conducive and okay.
“Don’t blame people trying to feed their family, put them in your shoes. If you don’t feed your wife she will complain,” he added.
The former Nigeria international’s comments come amid continued concerns over players’ welfare and financial instability in the domestic league.
