The 2025/2026 season of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) came to a dramatic close on Wednesday, with five clubs officially relegated to the second tier following the conclusion of the regular season.
Sunshine Queens, Pacesetter Queens, Naija Ratels, Osun Babes, and Confluence Queens were all confirmed to have dropped out of the top flight after failing to secure survival on the final matchday.
Despite recording a 2-0 victory over Confluence Queens in Akure, Sunshine Queens could not escape relegation.
Goals from Lolade Akintunde, who converted from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, and Bunmi Adenuga late on, proved insufficient to lift them out of the drop zone, as Confluence Queens also bowed out.
In Ibadan, Pacesetter Queens were held to a 1-1 draw by Naija Ratels in a direct relegation battle. Janet Achukwu had given Ratels the lead in the 18th minute before Samantha Victor equalised for the hosts.
The result, however, sealed the fate of both sides as they finished below the safety line.
Elsewhere, Osun Babes suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Delta Queens in Asaba.
Titilayo Aweda starred with a first-half brace, scoring in the 3rd and 20th minutes, while Anastasia Terfa added a third in the 55th minute to confirm Osun Babes’ relegation.
At the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, FC Robo Queens edged Nasarawa Amazons 2-1. Opeyemi Ajakaye opened the scoring in the 24th minute, before Oluwakemi Adegbuyi doubled the lead early in the second half.
Ayatsea Hembafan pulled one back for the visitors, but it was not enough to prevent defeat.
Dannaz Ladies secured an impressive 3-2 away victory over Remo Stars Ladies in Ikenne.
After an early goal from Chiamaka Ojialor, Dannaz responded through Fatimoh Solaty, Zainab Raji, and Ajoke Akinbo, before a late own goal by Miracle Omeke reduced the deficit.
In Benin City, Edo Queens continued their strong form with a 2-1 win over Rivers Angels. Atume Doosuur and Esther Inyang were on target for the hosts, while Patience Otubo grabbed a consolation for Rivers Angels.
Other results saw Abia Angels fall 1-0 at home to Ahudiyannem Queens courtesy of Loveth Edeh’s second-half strike, while Ekiti Queens claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Bayelsa Queens thanks to an early goal from Joke Adeyemo.
Heartland Queens also secured a late 1-0 victory over Adamawa Queens in Owerri, with Chimebere Opara scoring the decisive goal in the 88th minute.
With the regular season now concluded, attention will shift to the NWFL Super Six playoffs, where the top teams will battle for the league title, while the relegated sides prepare for life in the lower division.
