The government of Senegal has thrown its support behind Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe following the ongoing controversy surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) verdict.
According to official sources, the Senegalese President has made direct contact with Motsepe, assuring him of the country’s full backing for his leadership and stewardship of African football.
The development comes despite Senegal’s decision to escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), as they continue to challenge the outcome of the disputed AFCON ruling.
However, Senegal were quick to clarify that Motsepe played no role in the decision-making process.
The authorities emphasized that the verdict in question was delivered by an independent CAF body, distancing the CAF president from any influence over the final decision.
“They maintain that he had zero contribution to the final outcome,” a statement noted, reinforcing confidence in Motsepe’s neutrality amid the controversy.
The situation remains unresolved as Senegal pursue legal redress at CAS, while reaffirming their trust in the leadership of CAF under Motsepe.
