Achraf Hakimi, star defender of Paris Saint-Germain and the Moroccan national team, has been crowned the African Player of the Year 2025, capping off what many have described as one of the greatest seasons ever achieved by an African full-back.

The honour was announced on Wednesday evening at the prestigious CAF Awards ceremony held at Mohammed VI University in Rabat, Morocco.

Hakimi clinched the award ahead of two top contenders Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen  both considered heavy favourites based on their excellent performances for club and country.

The 27-year-old Moroccan international has enjoyed a remarkable year, playing a pivotal role in PSG’s domestic success and delivering outstanding performances on the international stage. His consistency, versatility, and leadership earned him widespread recognition across the African football fraternity.

Hakimi becomes the first Moroccan player since 1998 to win the award and only the second defender in history to claim the honour, marking a historic moment for North African football.

The victory also reflects Morocco’s impressive football development in recent years, particularly after their groundbreaking run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Hakimi expressed gratitude to supporters, teammates, and the CAF, dedicating the award to young African players aspiring to greatness.

With this achievement, Achraf Hakimi has etched his name among Africa’s elite football icons.
