34 Nigerians set to shine at 2026 NCAA outdoor track and field championships

A strong contingent of 34 Nigerian athletes has been named in the official entry list for the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, set to take place at the iconic Hayward Field from June 10 to June 13.

The athletes, representing various U.S. colleges, will compete across multiple events including sprints, relays, jumps, and throws, highlighting the growing presence and impact of Nigerian talent in American collegiate athletics.

Leading the charge is Samuel Ogazi, the defending champion in the men’s 400 metres.

The standout sprinter will return to Hayward Field determined to retain his title against a competitive field.

Also drawing significant attention is Kanyinsola Ajayi, who recently shattered the Nigerian national record in the men’s 100 metres.

Ajayi heads into the championships as one of the top contenders, eyeing his first NCAA outdoor title.

In the men’s 200 metres, Israel Okon enters as the fastest qualifier and is considered a strong favourite for gold.

On the women’s side, high jumper Temitope Adeshina will be looking to upgrade her bronze medal from her freshman year. The rising star is targeting her maiden NCAA outdoor championship title.

The Nigerian contingent’s participation underscores the country’s increasing influence in U.S. collegiate sports.

Their performances in Eugene are expected to further spotlight Nigerian excellence on the global stage as the championships draw closer.
