Wilfred Ndidi’s £9m release clause uncovered

Wilfred Ndidi could leave Leicester City for just £9 million this summer, thanks to a relegation release clause in his contract.

The clause was added when the Nigerian midfielder signed a new three-year deal last summer, shortly after his previous contract expired.

With Leicester preparing for life in the Championship and needing to balance the books, Ndidi is among the players likely to attract significant interest in the transfer market.

Ndidi came close to a move to Monaco in January, but then-manager Ruud van Nistelrooy firmly ruled out any mid-season departure.

Signed from Genk for £17 million in January 2017, Ndidi is currently Leicester’s second-longest-serving player after Jamie Vardy, who will leave the club this summer.

The 27-year-old recently marked his 300th appearance for the Foxes in a match against Wolves, having featured consistently under both Steve Cooper and Van Nistelrooy this season.
