Super Falcons head coach, Justin Madugu, has shed light on why his team found it difficult to break down Botswana in their Group B clash at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite entering the match as clear favourites, Nigeria had to dig deep to secure a slim 1-0 victory over the determined Mares.

Speaking during the post-match press conference, Madugu admitted that his side was far from their best and revealed the factors that contributed to the underwhelming display.

“It was a bit of both,” Madugu said. “Botswana knew they had lost their first game, so they came out fighting. On our part, some of us were complacent and took the game for granted. That’s why it turned out the way it did.”

The nine-time African champions will now turn their attention to the final group match against Algeria, as they aim to finish top of the group.
