The Mares of Botswana delivered one of their most spirited performances in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations history but fell just short against the Super Falcons of Nigeria.

After narrowly losing their opening match to Algeria, the Southern African side returned with renewed determination, frustrating the Falcons for most of the game.

Despite their dominant 3-0 win over Tunisia in their opener, the nine-time African champions failed to impress in this second Group B fixture, struggling to break down a resolute Botswana side.

It took a late moment of brilliance from Chiwendu Ihezuo to make the difference, as the forward struck in the 87th minute to hand Nigeria a hard-fought 1-0 win.

With the victory, Nigeria booked their spot in the quarter-finals, amassing six points from two games.

Botswana will now face Tunisia in their final group match, while Nigeria will round off their group campaign against Algeria.
