Unity Cup/Russia Friendly: Chelle names squad for London tournament and Moscow clash

Super Eagles Head Coach Eric Chelle has unveiled a 25-man squad for the upcoming Unity Cup Tournament in London, including in-form winger Moses Simon, experienced forward Ahmed Musa, Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi, and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

The Unity Cup, set to take place at the Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford, West London, will feature Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. Nigeria will face Ghana on Wednesday, May 28, in the second semi-final, following the opening clash between Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago a day earlier. The finals and third-place match are scheduled for Saturday, May 31.

Chelle emphasized the tournament’s importance, stating: “The Unity Cup offers a chance to test new players in different positions and build squad depth ahead of our key fixtures later this year.”

The squad includes a mix of Europe-based stars and standout talents from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Junior Harrison Nduka, captain of the CHAN-bound Eagles B and Remo Stars, headlines the domestic contingent. Other local players include Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, Sodiq Ismaila, Waliu Ojetoye, Papa Daniel Mustapha, Saviour Isaac, Collins Ugwueze, Sikiru Alimi, and Adamu Abubakar.

For the high-profile international friendly against Russia on Friday, June 6 at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Coach Chelle has named a 21-man squad. Several players from the Unity Cup roster return, joined by additional Europe-based regulars.

Notable inclusions are team captain William Troost-Ekong, defenders Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel, and forwards Victor Boniface and Sadiq Umar.
