Cristiano Ronaldo has stated that only a serious injury would force him to consider retiring from football.
Speaking after Portugal’s dramatic UEFA Nations League final victory over Spain, Ronaldo disclosed that he played through an injury during the match but chose to push through for his country.
“It’s been bothering me since the warm-up,” the 40-year-old Al Nassr striker said. “But for Portugal, if I had to break my leg, I would do it. It’s a title—I had to play and give everything.”
Ronaldo scored a crucial equaliser that pushed the match into extra time, and Portugal eventually triumphed 5-4 in a penalty shootout to lift the trophy in Germany. He was substituted in the 86th minute after the injury prevented him from continuing.
Reflecting on his career, Ronaldo acknowledged he’s nearing the end of his playing days but emphasized that retirement isn’t on the horizon yet.
“You know how old I am. Obviously, I’m closer to the end than the beginning, but I have to enjoy every moment,” he said. “If I don’t get seriously injured, I’ll keep going.”
