Mats Hummels is on his way to Bologna, who surprisingly finished third in Serie A last season and will therefore compete in the Champions League next season.
The 35-year-old defender from Bergisch Gladbach is without a club after 508 games for Borussia Dortmund, 118 matches for Bayern Munich, and 78 internationals for Germany.
Hummels was not in the German selection at the last European Championship, although he was still important for Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on the way to the lost final at Wembley.
Xabi Alonso would also like to add the experienced defender to his selection, but Hummels seems to be hungry for an adventure in Italy at the end of his fine career.
Bologna is losing Italian international Riccardo Calafiori (22) to Arsenal for around 60 million euros.
