Nigeria’s sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan is in line for a bumper payout after claiming silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday.
The 28-year-old, Nigeria’s only reigning world champion heading into the competition, clocked 12.29s to finish second behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stormed to gold in a national record of 12.24s.
World Athletics had earlier confirmed a total prize purse of $8,498,000 for the Tokyo showpiece, with generous allocations across individual and relay events. The prize scale for individual races is:
$70,000 for gold
$35,000 for silver
$22,000 for bronze
$16,000 for fourth place
$11,000 for fifth
$7,000 for sixth
$6,000 for seventh
$5,000 for eighth.
Amusan’s silver guarantees her $35,000 in official prize money.
She is also set to receive a further $20,000 from Hiracer, Nigeria’s official kit supplier for Tokyo 2025, which promised bonuses to medal-winning athletes before the championships.
The company which also outfits teams from Algeria, Zambia, Tunisia, Uzbekistan and Myanmar pledged $30,000 for gold, $20,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze.
In total, Amusan will take home an estimated $55,000 (₦82.5m) for her performance, underlining the financial rewards for podium finishers at the world stage.
