The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced a 15-athlete contingent for the 20th World Athletics Championships, scheduled to hold from September 13–21, 2025, at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo.
The squad comprises seven women and eight men, who will compete across 11 events including sprints, hurdles, relays, jumps, and throws.
Leading the Nigerian charge are:
Oluwatobi Amusan 100m hurdles world record holder
Ese Brume Olympic bronze medalist and Africa’s long jump queen
Nathaniel Ezekiel fast-rising 400m hurdles star
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi seasoned shot putter
Other notable athletes on the roster include: Rosemary Chukwuma, Prestina Ochonogor, Chioma Onyekwere Lyons, Obiageri Amaechi, Oyesade Olatoye, Kayinsola Ajayi, Israel Okon, Udodi Onwuzurike, Samuel Ogazi, Chidi Okezie, and Charles Godfred.
AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, said the final list was strictly based on merit and World Athletics qualification standards.
He expressed confidence that Team Nigeria would put up a strong showing in Tokyo.
With top names like Amusan, Brume, Ezekiel, and Ajayi headlining the squad, expectations are high as the countdown begins to Nigeria’s quest for glory on the global stage.
