Nigeria’s Deborah Abiodun has been voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Rookie of the Month for September, following a string of impressive displays for Washington Spirit.

The 20-year-old, who only made her debut on August 31 against Chicago Red Stars, wasted no time making an impact. She earned her first start in the 2-0 victory over Seattle the following week and featured in three of Washington’s four matches in September.

Abiodun topped the charts for tackles and duels won at the club, while ranking second across the entire league for tackles won. She also recorded an 87.3% passing accuracy in the middle third, underlining her growing influence in midfield.

Her award extends Washington Spirit’s remarkable record, as the club has now produced six Rookie of the Month winners since the beginning of the 2024 season.

The monthly accolade, sponsored by Ally, is decided by the NWSL Media Association and the league’s broadcast team.
