Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone emergency surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during his team’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City on Sunday.

The 27-year-old was injured late in the match after colliding with the post while attempting to connect with a cross from Anthony Elanga. Despite receiving on-field treatment and trying to continue, Awoniyi was clearly in discomfort.

It wasn’t until Monday that club medical staff fully diagnosed the severity of the injury, prompting his immediate hospitalisation and urgent surgical intervention.

The incident sparked controversy, with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly furious over the handling of the situation. Awoniyi had received approximately three minutes of treatment but could not be substituted, as Forest had already used their final substitution window to bring on Jota Silva for Elliot Anderson.
