The hope of the Nigerian International Victor Boniface returning to action suffered a huge setback on Saturday.
Boniface sustained the injury during the international break with the Super Eagles during the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier.
He was initially slated to return before Christmas against Freiburg but he was unable to return.
The striker had “a small step backwards in the rehabilitation process,” Bayer Leverkusen announced ahead of their friendly game against regional league side Rot-Weiß Oberhausen on Sunday
The hope of returning to action next weekend against Borussia Dortmund remained uncertain.
