Former Nigerian international Sunday Oliseh has endorsed Wilfred Ndidi as the next captain of the Super Eagles.
The Besiktas midfielder, who has been a mainstay in the team, is seen as a natural successor to current leaders Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong, both of whom are expected to step down after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Oliseh, who had a distinguished career with Ajax Amsterdam, believes Ndidi possesses the necessary qualities to lead the Super Eagles. Speaking on the “Oliseh Insight Podcast,” the former national team captain said, “At the moment, I think nobody doubts the respect the players have for Ndidi. He is a player who plays every game, and that’s important. He has the right charisma.”
While Oliseh made it clear that he is not trying to push a specific agenda regarding the captaincy, he pointed out that Ndidi’s leadership is already evident. “I am not trying to push for who is going to be captain, but I think Ndidi is already the captain anyway, because he captained the last game,” he added.
Ndidi’s consistent performances for both club and country have earned him admiration from fans and teammates alike, and many see his leadership as a natural progression for the Super Eagles in the post-Musa and Troost-Ekong era.
The 2025 AFCON in Morocco may mark the end of an era, but it could also pave the way for Ndidi to take on one of the most prestigious roles in Nigerian football.
With his experience, presence on the field, and respect from the squad, Ndidi is widely tipped to guide the Super Eagles into the next phase of their journey.
